Kolossa Alexandra Haring Tragicomedy; or, the world according to Haring.
By the time of his death from AIDS at the age of 31, Keith Haring (1958-1990) was already a wildly successful and popular artist. Haring`s original and instantly recognizable style, full of thick black lines, bold colors, and graffiti-inspired cartoon-like figures, won him the appreciation of both the art world and the general public; his work appeared simultaneously on T-shirts, gallery walls, and public murals. In 1986, Haring founded Pop Shop, a boutique in New York`s SoHo selling Haring-designed memorabilia, to benefit charities and help bring his work closer to the public and especially street kids, with whom he never lost contact.
About the author:
Alexandra Kolossa studied art history, German literature, and business administration in Trier. She took her doctorate in 2003. Since 1998 she has been a freelance author and contemporary art exhibition curator. She lives and works in Duren, Germany.

Baal-Teshuva Jacob Rothko One of the most esteemed abstract expressionists and greatest painters of the 20th century
Mark Rothko belongs to the generation of American artists who completely revolutionized the essence of abstract painting. His stylistic evolution, from a figurative visual repertoire to an abstract style rooted in the active relationship of the observer to the painting, embodied the radical vision of a renaissance in painting. Rothko characterized this relationship as "a consummated experience between picture and onlooker". His colour formations indeed draw the observer into a space filled with an inner light.
Rothko always resisted attempts to interpret his paintings. He was mainly concerned with the viewer's experience, the merging of work and recipient beyond verbal comprehension. Rothko was an intellectual, a thinker, a highly educated man. He loved music and literature and was very involved in philosophy, especially in the works of Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche and of ancient Greek philosophy and mythology.
Rothko was a protagonist within the movement of American painters who became known as the Abstract Expressionists. First formed in New York City during the inter-war years, this group was also called the New York School. In all the history of art, they became the first American artists to receive international recognition as a significant movement. Many among them, including Rothko, have become legendary figures.
About the author:
Jacob Baal-Teshuva, born 1929, is author, critic and independent curator of museum shows. He studied at the Hebrew university in Jerusalem and the New York University. His numerous publications include works on Marc Chagall, Alexander Calder, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Jacob Baal-Teshuva lives and works in New York and Paris.

Kettenmann Andrea Kahlo Frida Kahlo - painter of pictures expressing the burdens that weighed upon her soul.
The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is one of the most important 20th century painters, and one of the few Latin American artists to have achieved a global reputation. In 1983 her work was declared the property of the Mexican state.
Kahlo was one of the daughters of an immigrant German photographer and a Mexican woman of Indian origin. Her life and work were more inextricably interwoven than in almost any other artist's case. Two events in her life were of crucial importance. When she was eighteen, a bus accident put her in hospital for a year with a smashed spinal column and fractured pelvis. It was in her sick bed that she first started to paint. Then, aged twenty-one, she married the world-famous Mexican mural artist Diego Rivera. She was to suffer the effects of the accident her whole life long, and was particularly pained by her inability to have children.
Kahlo's arresting pictures, most of them small format self-portraits, express the burdens that weighed upon her soul: her unbearable physical pain, the grief that Rivera's occasional affairs prompted, the sorrow her childlessness caused her, her homesickness when living abroad and her longing to feel that she had put down roots, profound loneliness. But they also declare her passionate love for her husband, her pronounced sensuousness, and her unwavering survival instinct.
About the author:
Andrea Kettenmann (born in 1959) studied art history in Gie?en, Gottingen and Heidelberg before joining the art history department of the University of Hamburg. In 1986 she visited Mexico on a fellowship, and now lives there, working as a freelance art historian. She has now worked on a number of exhibitions and catalogues, including the catalogue for the retrospective on Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo’s husband, in Detroit.

Jodidio Philip Piano: Renzo Piano Building Workshop 1966-2005 "The array of buildings by Renzo Piano is staggering in scope and comprehensive in the diversity of scale, material, and form. He is truly an architect whose sensibilities represent the widest range of this and earlier centuries." Such was the description of Renzo Piano given by the Pritzker Prize jury citation as they bestowed the prestigious award on him in 1998.Whereas some architects have a signature style, what sets Piano apart is that he seeks simply to apply a coherent set of ideas to new projects in extraordinarily different ways. "One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again," Piano says. "Like a movie director doing a love story, a Western, or a murder mystery, a new world confronts an architect with each project." This explains why it takes more than a superficial glance to recognize Piano's fingerprints on such varied projects as the Pompidou Center in Paris (1971–77), the Kansai airport in Osaka, Japan (1990–94), and the Tjibaou Cultural Center in Noumea, New Caledonia (1993–98). This stunning monograph, illustrated by photographs, sketches, and plans, covers Piano's career to date.
The updated publication includes new photographs of projects completed since the previous edition, such as his The New York Times Building in New York, the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, Switzerland, The Morgan Library in New York, as well as some sneak peeks at his current projects, including the 66-story London Bridge Tower, which is set to be Europe's tallest building.
About the author:
Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. His books include TASCHEN's Architecture Now! series, Building a New Millennium, and monographs on Tadao Ando, Norman Foster, Richard Meier, Jean Nouvel, and Zaha Hadid. He is internationally renowned as one of the most popular writers on the subject of architecture.

Gisler-Huwiler Madeleine, Schutze Sebastian Antiquities. The Complete Collection The birth of neoclassicism.
This spectacular compilation of plates, representing a superb collection of ancient vases, is the fruit of a collaboration between Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803), British diplomat and collector, and Pierre-Francois Hugues d`Hancarville (1719-1805), an adventurous connoisseur and amateur art dealer. As an envoy to the British Embassy in Naples, Hamilton developed a keen interest in both antiquity and volcanology, studying the royal excavations of Pompei and Hercolano and publishing the first scientific essays on mount Vesuvius. During his stay in Naples he built the finest collection of ancient vases of his time, which he sold, in 1772, to the British Museum in London. Before the invaluable pieces were shipped off to England, d?Hancarville was commissioned to document the vases in words and images. Never before have ancient vases been represented with such meticulous detail and sublime beauty. His famous catalogue was published in four volumes, known as "Les Antiquites d?Hancarville." Complete sets of these rare volumes today fetch top prices at auction. We have borrowed a fine copy from the Anna Amalia Library in Weimar to reproduce in exacting detail, so that modern readers can experience the same images that sparked Britain`s, and indeed Europe`s, taste in classical style and inspired reproductions from pottery manufacturers such as Wedgwood.
About the authors:
Madeleine Gisler-Huwiler studied classical archaeology, ancient history and old Egyptian at Fribourg University. She has collaborated on various excavations and exhibitions and is presently writing a catalogue of the first Hamilton collection of vases for the British Museum, which is partially represented in the Antiquites of D'Hancarville.
Sebastian Schutze was a longtime research fellow at the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute for Art History) in Rome and currently holds the Bader Chair in Southern Baroque Art at Queen's University, Kingston. He has published widely on Italian art and culture in the early modern era and is a member of the scientific board of the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici in Naples and of the Institut europeen d'histoire de la Republique des Lettres in Paris.

Lamprecht Barbara Neutra. Complete Works Originally from Vienna, Richard Neutra came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style.
Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. Neutra's ability to incorporate technology, aesthetic, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist architecture.
For the first time, all of Neutra's works (nearly 300 private homes, schools, and public buildings) are gathered together in one volume, illustrated by over 1000 photographs, including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers.
About the editor:
Peter Goessel runs a practice for the design of museums and exhibitions. He is the editor of TASCHEN's monographs on Julius Shulman, R. M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra, as well as the editor of the Basic Architecture Series.
About the author:
Barbara Lamprecht writes and teaches architectural history, concentrating on Modernism, and practices architecture, specializing in sustainability and small spaces. She contributes to Dwell, The Architectural Review, Architecture, Architectural Record and Fine Homebuilding. She is also the author of TASCHEN's Neutra: Complete Works.

Brooks Pfeiffer Bruce Wright. 1943-1959 The life and works of an architectural genius.
Part of an exhaustive three-volume monograph featuring all of Wright's 1,100 designs, both realized and unrealized. This volume covers the postwar years and the "living architecture" period.
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was one of the fathers of modern architecture; his work helped define the modern era, had a widespread cultural influence, and remains highly influential today, half a century after his demise. The mature work of his final years is the subject of this monograph, including all his designs from that period, even those never built. Based on unlimited access to the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives in Taliesin, Arizona, this penetrating study gives an unrivalled overview of Wright's groundbreaking work and eventual 'starchitect' status - included are drawings he made for an unrealized house intended for Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller.
Together with two forthcoming companion titles, this three-volume monograph will cover Wright's entire oeuvre, from his early Prairie Houses, through the Usonian concept home and "living architecture" buildings, to late projects like the Guggenheim Museum and his fantastic vision of the "living city." Author Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, who served as Wright's apprentice during the 1950s, highlights the latest research and gives fresh insights into the work, providing new dates for many of the plans and houses. A wealth of personal photos also illustrates the working routine at Frank Lloyd Wright's fellowship.
This volume starts in 1943, when Wright's organic "living architecture" introduced ideas for the use of solar energy and curved open spaces. In addition to many private projects and the Guggenheim museum, the period up to 1959 includes Wright's astonishing plans for a new Baghdad, his only realized high-rise tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, the crystal figure of the Beth Sholom Synagogue in Pennsylvania, and plans for an endless row of houses with floor plans based on hexagons.

Bichler Lorenz, Trede Melanie Hiroshige Hiroshige's Edo: Masterful ukiyo-e woodblock prints of Tokyo in the mid-19th century.
Literally meaning "pictures of the floating world", ukiyo-e refers to the famous Japanese woodblock print genre that originated in the 17th century and is practically synonymous with the Western world's visual characterization of Japan. Because they could be mass produced, ukiyo-e works were often used as designs for fans, New Year's greeting cards, single prints, and book illustrations, and traditionally they depicted city life, entertainment, beautiful women, kabuki actors, and landscapes. The influence of ukiyo-e in Europe and the USA, often referred to as Japonisme, can be seen in everything from impressionist painting to today's manga and anime illustration. This reprint is made from one of the finest complete original sets of woodblock prints belonging to the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo.
Hiroshige (1797-1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition. Though he captured a variety of subjects, his greatest talent was in creating landscapes of his native Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and his final masterpiece was a series known as "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" (1856-1858). This resplendent complete reprint pairs each of the 120 large-scale illustrations with a description, allowing readers to plunge themselves into Hiroshige's beautifully vibrant landscapes.

Sagner-Duchting Karin Monet Claude Monet (1840-1926) was both the most typical and the most individual painter associated with the Impressionist movement. His long life and extraordinary work were dedicated to a pictorial exploration of the sensations which reality, and in particular landscape, offer the human eye.
Monet`s poplars, grain stacks, Rouen Cathedral, and waterlily paintings - among the most beloved works of the Impressionist period - were created long before the currents of the contemporary avant-garde and had an inestimable influence on the development of modern art. This book traces the life`s work of one of art history`s most beloved painters.
About the author:
Karin Sagner-Duchting studied art history, modern German literature, and classical archaeology at Munich University. She received her doctorate in 1983 with a thesis on Claude Monet's water lily paintings and was academic assistant at the Bayerische Staatsgemaldesammlungen until 1988. Based in Munich, she researches and publishes in the field of 19th-century art.

Feeney F. X. Michael Mann Over the course of the eight feature films he has directed since 1979, Michael Mann has shown himself, time and again, to be a rigorous, honest dramatist, a maker of solid worlds. So much so that in America, at least, he tends to be underrated. The most respectful of his critics often define him (a bit too simply) as a "realist." Certainly, whether the subject is thievery (The Jericho Mile, Thief, Heat), killers (Manhunter, Collateral), frontier life (The Last of the Mohicans), the nuanced struggle between the news media and corporate money (The Insider), or that of a celebrated athlete looking to find his life`s meaning in a world of bigotry (Ali), Mann seeks authenticity above all. Whatever suspense, entertainment value, and emotional or philosophical insight his work may yield rises from a truthfully imagined, painstakingly observed set of human beings and their warring intentions. This book explores Mann`s multifaceted oeuvre, including his most recent film, Miami Vice.
Made with full access to Michael Mann`s archives!
About the editor:
Paul Duncan has edited 50 film books for TASCHEN, including the award-winning The Ingmar Bergman Archives, and authored Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick in the Film Series.
About the author:
F. X. Feeney is a screenwriter and critic based in Los Angeles. His film credits include The Big Brass Ring, based on a story by Orson Welles, and Frankenstein Unbound, directed by Roger Corman, whilst his reviews have appeared in L.A. Weekly and other publications. F. X. has also written TASCHEN`s Michael Mann and Polanski.

Steve McQueen, William Claxton Live fast, die young.
"It is a testament to Claxton's eye and skill that it does more than simply show a movie star as work and play. Claxton brings a lost era alive through his subject." - Value Rich Magazine, Palm Springs
"One time when I was with him, he drove a brand new Ford convertible, with only thirty miles on the speedometer, at top speed for such a long stretch of the Texas highway that the engine began to smoke and eventually caught on fire. He slowed down and shouted to me, "Clax, when I tell you to jump, jump!" We did jump out of the car just as it burst into flames. Steve sat on the side of the country road at a safe distance from the burning vehicle and laughed his head off." -William Claxton
Sharing a passion for fast cars, Steve McQueen (1930-1980) and William Claxton became friends early in McQueen's career and remained close until his premature death. Claxton frequented McQueen throughout his many incarnations (daredevil, dirt biker, movie star, sports car driver, ladies man, family man, etc.), capturing at every turn another side of McQueen's enigmatic tough-guy/nice-guy personality. As this photo album demonstrates, Claxton's photographic talent and sensibilities were perfectly attuned to the actor's multifaceted character. This is the real Steve McQueen, immortalized by Claxton's empathetic lens.
About the editor:
California-native Steve Crist's TASCHEN titles include Andre de Dienes's Marilyn, William Claxton's Steve McQueen, and The Polaroid Book.
About the photographer:
William Claxton (1927-2008) began his career shooting jazz record cover art. His iconic images of Chet Baker, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday and many others reflect his preeminence among photographers of jazz music. Claxton worked for many of the biggest publishers including Life, Paris Match, and Vogue magazines. His work has been shown in galleries around the world, and his photographic prints are now sought after by collectors of fine art photography. He passed away on October 11, 2008 in his hometown Los Angeles.

Faulkner Christopher Jean Renoir A director makes only one movie in his life. Then he breaks it into pieces and makes it again. -Jean Renoir.
Jean Renoir (1894-1979) was, like his father Auguste, a virtuoso in his field. From early films such as La Fille de l`Eau and La Chienne through later masterpieces like Rules of the Game and The Grand Illusion (widely considered to be two of the greatest films ever made), Renoir forged a reputation as France`s most important filmmaker. Highly prolific (he directed over 40 films), Renoir worked in a multitude of genres, though social realism was his most powerful mode of expression.
About the editor:
Paul Duncan has edited 50 film books for TASCHEN, including the award-winning The Ingmar Bergman Archives, and authored Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick in the Film Series.
About the author:
Christopher Faulkner is professor of film studies and director of the Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. He is the author of The Social Cinema of Jean Renoir and, with Olivier Curchod, of La Regle du jeu: scenario original de Jean Renoir, as well as numerous articles on Renoir and on French cinema.

Film Posters of the 90s: The Essential Movies of the Decade Whatever your taste in movies, the filmmakers of the 1990s had it covered. On the one hand, the big studios took advantage of the ever-increasing sophistication of computer-generated imagery to produce spectacular, mega-budget "event" movies like "Titanic", "The Matrix" and "Mission: Impossible"; on the other, a new generation of independents like Tarantino and the Coen Brothers was winning its spurs with low-tech and often low-budget productions such as "Reservoir Dogs" and "The Big Lebowski". Spielberg turned his attention to the Second World War with "Saving Private Ryan", Eastwood and Costner gave the Western a new lease of life with "Unforgiven" and "Dances With Wolves", and the Brits chipped in with two unexpected successes, "The Full Monty" and "Trainspotting". From the eerie psychosis of "The Silence of the Lambs" to the romantic fantasy "Pretty Woman", this was a decade that offered something for everyone.
Hollywood may have become besotted by all things digital, but print on paper, in the form of the poster, remained one of the most important means of promoting movies of all kinds, and the poster artists of the 90s proved that they could still produce striking and alluring images. This book reproduces the pick of the decade.

Maximilian Prince of Wied Travels in the Interior of North America In 1832 Maximilian Prince of Wied set out with the Swiss painter Karl Bodmer on an expedition to study the way of life of the North American Indians. Starting at the east coast, they followed the courses of the Ohio. Mississippi and Missouri rivers, until they reached the far northern regions of present-day Montana. While the Prince collected ritual implements, noted his observations and transcribed the intensive conversations he conducted with the Indians. Karl Bodmer created fascinating watercolours.
Bodmer portrayed the chieftains and the warriors, the dances and the ceremonies, and even captured the bison on the broad expanses of the prairies - images that the general public had never seen before. Consequently, on their return to Europe, the researchers planned a publication of their experiences, which from 1839 onwards appeared in a small, exquisite edition, and finally comprised a portfolio with 81 plates and two volumes of text.
Reproduced from a beautiful hand-coloured copy, which remains to this day in the keeping of the Prince's family, Travels in the Interior of North America presents all 81 of the plates and highlights in numerous text passages important details of the paintings. A selection of texts by Prince Maximilian brings the pictures to life and inspires the reader to decipher their mysteries.

Advertising Now. Print The art of selling: today's most effective and original ads
The world's sharpest creative minds are in high demand in the advertising world, because making effective ads takes a whole lot more than just marketing know-how. A great ad grabs the viewer's attention and gets the point across in an original, surprising, funny, touching, or even shocking way. Because ads reflect global and regional mentalities, studying them is interesting not only for their selling points but also for what they have to say about their clients and target audiences. This mega-roundup of the world's best contemporary advertisements highlights the work of agencies in over 40 countries. Organized by subjects, such as socio-political, food and beverage, cars, technology, and media, the ads are dated and annotated with information on the design agencies, clients, and products. Also included are essays written by top creative directors including members and presidents of the jury in advertising Festivals such as the Cannes Advertising Festival and Clio Awards. This guide is a must-have for managers, advertising students and professionals, graphic designers, and anyone who's interested in the different ways products are advertised around the world.

Llinas Jose, Sarra Jordi Josep Maria Jujol Josep Maria Jujol (1879-1949) developed his unusual architectural style through many years of close, creative collaboration with Antoni Gaudi. Jujol's work is characterized by a high degree of sensibility to the forms of nature, an emphatically anti-geometric aesthetic, attention to workmanship and detail, as well as the imaginative use of old and previously utilized material. It is an eloquent expression of his affection for the Catalonian landscape, his modesty, and deep religious faith.

Ernst Bruno Impossible Worlds: Adventures with Impossible Objects: Optical Illusions Even as a boy, Maurits Cornells Escher was intrigued by graphic techniques. He studied graphic arts at Haarlem under Jessurun de Mesquita, and in 1922 moved to Italy, where he settled in Rome two years later. During the decade he spent there, the Dutch artist explored the options which different graphic techniques made available, and he chose his subject matter purely on the strength of the technical challenges it would pose.
Around the time he left Italy, Escher's subject matter underwent a fundamental change. Up until this time his interest had been exclusively in mastering his craft, but now he gave his prime attention to his subjects. "Ideas came into my mind quite unrelated to graphic arts." The pictures that now resulted reflected his fascination with the enigmatic laws that governed the world around him: Escher's visual representations expressed the mental images that absorbed him.
This title contains two of the most interesting books about Escher: "Adventures with Impossible Objects" and "Optical Illusions".

Adam Hans Christian Karl Blossfeldt. The complete published work German photography pioneer Karl Blossfeldt photographed plants so beautifully, and with such originality, that his work transcends the medium itself. Over more than 30 years, he took thousands of photographs, revealing a formally rigorous talent whose precision and dedication bridge the nineteenth and twentieth century worlds of image making and bring a distinctly sculptural aspect to a firmly two-dimensional art form. Beautifully but starkly composed against plain cardboard backgrounds, Blossfeldt's images, relying on a northern light for their sense of volume, reveal nothing of the man but everything of themselves. They are still-lifes, piercingly final statements on their subject, and have endured owing to their technical brilliance and the ongoing fascination of students and photographers. Like their maker, they are quietly and lastingly effective.

Becks-Mallorny Ulrike Wassily Kandinsky. 1866-1944. The journey to abstraction Wassily Kandinsky was undoubtedly one of the most exciting artists of the twentieth century. He brought an equal passion and commitment to his work as a painter, a theoretician and a teacher of art. After conventional beginnings in Munich, he devoted his intellectual and artistic energies to pioneering new dimensions of expression in art. He ultimately arrived at an abstract style of painting based on the inner properties of colour and form.
Although Kandinsky may not be the first truly abstract artist, he was nevertheless the first to experiment with non-representational forms in a logical manner and to develop out of them a homogeneous style. His writings on art, including his ground-breaking work On the Spiritual in Art, have lost none of their significance, and the Compositions which caused such a furore at the first Blaue Reiter exhibition in 1911 are still full and dazzling today.
